Che & Sue Ahn

Che & Sue Ahn We are the Founding Pastors of HRock Church and apostolic leaders of Harvest Apostolic Center in Pasadena, Calif. We desire to bring people closer to God and help them fulfill their God-given destinies. We have a heart to foster an apostolic and family-oriented community where we can enjoy the abundance that Abba God has for us in every area of life.

Personal Background

As young adults, we were so different from each other. Sue wanted to be a nun and a missionary to Africa, while Ché was a drug dealer and an addict. We both became followers of Jesus in the early 70s and met at a large Bible study in Washington, D.C., just minutes from the White House. We fell in love and find ourselves more in love with each passing year.

After we left the East Coast, our roots have been in SoCal for the last 30 years. We want to serve the people here with the great love of Abba God as we discover our true identity in Him.

With Filipino (Sue) and Korean (Ché) heritage, we have 4 children from the ages of 30 to 34 years old. We share 35 years of a strong marriage foundation built upon the Rock, Christ Jesus. Our three eldest children are married. Gabriel is married to his beautiful bride, Monica. Grace is married to Steve and enjoys parenting Justice. Joy is married to Kuoching, and they keep on their toes with their active Annabelle Joy. Mary is a life example to many, trusting for God’s best life partner for her according to His timing.

Personal Education

My major academic interests are history and theology. I received a B.A. in History from the University of Maryland, and an M.Div. and D.Min. from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena.

Favorites and Interests

I love to travel. While I have been to more than 60 nations, Hawaii is my favorite place. We have a time-share in Kauai, so Sue and I go there every year with our best friends, our children. I often listen to contemporary Christians artists like Hillsong United, David Crowder Band, Delirious, Misty Edwards, Matt Redman and our own Kenny Peavy. I also love the rock music of the 60s and 70s.
When it comes to books, I love to read and have a library of more than 3,000 works.  I read a lot of theology, but I also enjoy novels from authors like John Grisham and Robert Ludlum. When you fly as much as I do, you get lots of reading done!

In the world of sports, I’m an avid fan of the Washington Redskins, LA Lakers, USC Football, Baltimore Orioles in the American League, LA Dodgers in the National League and UCLA Basketball and Women’s Softball teams. My DVR is packed with sports events, especially great football and every Laker game!

When I’m not watching sports, I enjoy any movie with action and violence (seriously!), such as The Bourne Identity and The Matrix trilogies, all of the Alien movies, Predator and Terminator. But my all-time favorites are Gone With The Wind and The Sound of Music. Honestly, I think I am a romantic at heart!

Favorite Passage

Ephesians 2:4-8 – “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of His grace, expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

Fun Fact

I was born in my grandparents’ home, in Kwang Ju, South Korea, where I was delivered by my RN grandmother. My grandfather dedicated me to God to be a pastor, and here I am today, pastor of the greatest church in the world!

Education Background

I received a B.A. in Special Education and Primary and Secondary Education.

Favorites and Interests

I am interested in people and their stories, their life journeys. Cultures fascinate me, so living in LA with 170 languages spoken is an adventure. My favorite people are doing life with my growing family, like during our weekly time together around the supper table, being overjoyed by our two grandchildren. We will be expanding the size of our round family table. It thrills me to help people get to where they need to be in the journey of who they are, to teach what it means to love Jesus and love people as we become more conformed into the likeness of His image.

My favorite authors who have shaped my core values are Francis Frangipane, Elisabeth Elliot and Joy Dawson, Dr. Dobson and Gary Smalley. In the world of movies, I enjoy biographical stories, documentaries and real-life stories that stick with me and challenge me to be better. The Blind Side is a story of the love of Jesus.

My hobbies include gardening, enjoying art, traveling and learning how to save the planet by eating healthy and living green. Ché and I are foodies, and we like exploring new, cultural food experiences. If walking is a hobby, I enjoy prayer walking with friends. My daughter and I also attempt Zumba, which usually ends up becoming a comedy act.

Favorite Scriptures

All of John 15 and the Book of Proverbs (especially The Passion Translation by Brian Simmons)
